Letters, 1945 May-July. 1945.

The four letters were written, between May and July 1945, by Donald Friend to Donald Murray. At the time Friend was working for the 1st Field Unit, Military History Section. The letters include an account of Friend's experiences as a war artist and his living conditions.

Artist. Donald William Murray studied art under Dattillo Rubbo. In 1947, in partnership with Donald Friend, Murray purchased a cottage at Hill End, New South Wales. Over the next few years the town became established as an artists' colony, with many well known Australian artists travelling there to paint the landscape. In 1957, Donald Friend left Hill End to live overseas. Donald Murray stayed on in the cottage until his death in 1988. From the description of Papers of Donald Murray,...
